should i start small with my writing, then work up to big epic ideas?
maybe i just cant handle the huge stories i try to write, should i start off with small stories?
like involving a few characters? not big events like i write at the moment?
Yes. But don't think of it as starting with unimportant stuff and working your way up to the big. Writing short stories will be what helps you to become a better writer in general.
Once you have an idea for a short story, start planning it out. Write a detailed summary of every little thing that will happen in your story. This planning stage will prepare you for when you need to do much more planning for a novel.
When you actually write it, work on a strong beginning, vivid yet concise imagery, good characters and an original plot.
Read books on writing, and listen to your English teachers. Practice spelling and grammar so you don't have to slog through your writing and correct everything.
Once you've written a story you're happy with, show it to some people you trust. Once again, an English teacher would be good if you feel comfortable sharing, because they have experience in proofreading. If not, share it with friends or family. Tell them that you want them to tell you what you did wrong, and what you should change. Once you get their feedback (and if they just say "it's good", then keep sharing it with others until you get some criticism), take it and apply their comments to your writing. This will show you what you should watch out for next time around.
