I Need Sewing Buttons Help?

I have a Singer. Not sure the model, but it has and automatic buttonhole sewer(<-- is that evan a word, becuase its the same a Sewer like underground where the aligators live), well any ways it has a thing that measure the button but i'm very confsed of where to put it, Also what does the lever thing do?

Get out your owners manual. If it is electronic there is a hole above the throat plate next to the light. Plug it in there.
If you do not have a manual go online and check what your machine should be set at.
