When happens to a serviceman's dog tags when he dies?
In most cases, the "dog tags" (the servicemember ID tags) are given to the next-of-kin or to someone the Soldier knew. In some cases, the tags are buried or cremated with the remains -- it depends on the wishes of the Soldier.
In some unusual cases, the tags are donated to an organization or group which was closely associated with the Soldier.
The tags are part of the Soldier's personal effects and as such, are either given to the next-of-kin or stored until a decision can be made on what to do with those items.
